Pregnancy/Common Ailments/Low Iron Levels

Iron is vital to baby's physical growth and brain development as it helps produce the blood required to supply nutrition to the placenta. So as blood volume increases in pregnancy, extra iron is needed to prevent anaemia forming.

Anemia is most likely to develop in 2nd trimester of pregnancy and can cause fatigue, rapid heartbeat, paleness of skin, gums and around inside of eye, dizziness and strange cravings.

There are many iron supplements to choose from. To prevent iron induced constipation be sure to use a non constipating formula like Spatone, Solgar's Gentle Iron or Lifestream Spirulina.

Be sure to check your iron levels with your midwife or doctor.

Rebalance recommends

Spatone

A great, non-constipating, gentle iron formula that works quickly to build up those low iron levels.

Tips

Try not to take calcium, zinc or vitamin E supplements at the same time as iron as they can interfere with iron absorption.

To also 'top up' iron stores through diet, use blackstrap molasses, plums, prunes, kelp, bananas, green leafy vegetables, apricots and peas. Also include foods high in vitamin C to help with iron absorption.

Nettle tea can also be useful as nettle is rich in iron, chlorophyll and vitamin C.

Spirulina smoothies are a great way to start the day and a great source of iron and other important nutrients during pregnancy. Just add pineapple juice, banana and Spirulina to a blender, mix and enjoy!
